You're probably already acquainted with Lea T, the transgender model (and muse to Riccardo Tisci) who's best known for her work as a face of Givenchy. Aside from appearing in the French house's shows and ad campaigns, the Brazilian model has graced the pages of Vogue Paris, Love, Interview and more since 2010. Now, Lea T has received her most groundbreaking campaign yet: She's signed on to be a brand muse for global haircare brand Redken, with print and digital campaigns set for a January 2015 release. The Redken campaign — which will promote the brand's Chromatics haircolor line — celebrates individuality, and as one of the first openly transgender models to score such a lucrative beauty contract (she underwent sexual reassignment surgery in 2011), Lea T is truly an industry pioneer. "We're all people with our own personality, our own beauty, our own life," said Lea T in a statement. "I love working with Redken because they appreciate all kinds of beauty. They believe in the individuality of the person, and I think that's really important." Earlier this year in the fashion world, Andreja Pejic (who came up in the industry around the same time as Lea T) opened up about her sexual reassignment surgery, as well as her plans to create a documentary about her journey. In addition, Barneys New York shot its spring 2014 campaign with Bruce Weber starring 17 transgender models, and Laverne Cox, the transgender star of "Orange Is the New Black," topped many a best-dressed list during awards season. Now that the beauty industry has featured its first model who's an icon in the trans* community, we're one step closer to building worldwide understanding and acceptance. Congrats, Lea!
